ADVOCATE FOR FAIR HOUSING!
COUNTER THE 10% CAP!
Governor Weld has filed legislation to address controversy
surrounding elderly-disabled housing.
H. 5280, An Act to Improve Housing Opportunities for Elders
and Persons with Disabilities, would establish, among other
things, a 15% preference on the number of people with
disabilities living in elderly-disabled housing. The bill
also would fund new housing for people with disabilities,
ostensibly reducing the need for disabled-elderly projects.
Many disability-rights groups are generally supporting the
bill with qualifications.
Our voices must be heard on this legislation!
Fair Housing Advocacy Day
Thursday, November 17, 1994
State House
11:00 - 3:00 p.m.
We must let our legislators and legislative leadership know
where we stand on issues surrounding disabled-elderly
housing. A cap discriminates. A cap scapegoats. A cap is
a prescription for homelessness.
We need more housing, not housing restrictions. But it also
is reality that if H. 5280 fails, WE MAY GET SOMETHING MUCH
WORSE! A 10% cap -- with no moneys for new housing -- has
passed 3 times in the legislature. Strong powers are urging
the legislature to override the latest cap veto by the
governor. The Fair Housing Advocacy Day is a chance to
educate the legislature on our concerns. This is NOT a
rally or protest: it's a day to speak one-on-one with
legislators and staff.
Information on H. 5280 will be available throughout the day
on November 17, in hearing room 1A (Next to the side
entrance to the State House). Briefings will be held at
11:15 and 1:15.
Sponsors of the Advocacy Day include Boston Center for
Independent Living, Cape Organization for Rights of the
Disabled (CORD), Citizens' Housing and Planning Association
(CHAPA), Metrowest ILC, Mass. Office on Disability, and
Northeast Independent Living Program. To mention a few and
more sponsors are urged and welcome!
